How to Do Local Keyword Research Without Paying for Expensive Tools

Keyword research doesn’t require a $400-per-month SEO software subscription. For a local service business trying to rank in one or two markets, you can build an actionable keyword list with free tools and about two hours of focused work.

Here is the method we use at SVG Digital before launching any local SEO engagement.

Step 1: Start With Google’s Own Autocomplete

Open a browser in incognito mode so you get unfiltered suggestions. Type your primary service into Google and watch the autocomplete suggestions that appear. Do this for every variation: “plumber O’Fallon,” “plumber near O’Fallon,” “O’Fallon plumber,” “emergency plumber O’Fallon.”

Each autocomplete suggestion is a real search that real people in your market have typed. Google only shows you what it has seen at meaningful volume. Write down every relevant suggestion.

Then scroll to the bottom of the search results page and look at the “People also search for” and “Related searches” sections. These are additional keyword ideas from the same data pool.

Step 2: Look at What Your GBP Surfaces

Your Google Business Profile Insights panel shows you the exact search queries that triggered your listing to appear in the last 30 days. Go to your GBP dashboard and click Performance, then Searches. This is a free keyword report based on your actual current rankings.

Pay attention to the queries where you’re getting impressions but few or no clicks. Those are ranking opportunities where you appear but don’t earn the click, often because your profile or website doesn’t match the query well enough yet.

Step 3: Mine Google Search Console

If you have Google Search Console connected to your website (free, set up at search.google.com/search-console), you have access to the most accurate keyword data available: exactly what people searched when they found or passed over your site.

Filter the Search Results report by pages. Pull the keyword list for your top service pages. Look at which keywords are generating impressions but have low click-through rates. Those keywords have ranking potential that you’re not fully capitalizing on.

Step 4: Organize by Intent

Not all local keywords have the same value. Organize what you’ve found into three buckets:

High-intent buyer keywords: “emergency HVAC repair O’Fallon,” “book dentist appointment Florence SC.” These go on your service pages and in your Google Ads campaigns.

Research keywords: “how much does HVAC repair cost,” “is a root canal painful.” These are blog content and FAQ content that builds trust with people earlier in the decision process.

Navigational keywords: people searching your business name. Track these but don’t optimize for them separately, they’ll rank organically.

What to Do With the List

Target one primary keyword per page. Don’t stuff a single page with 20 keywords. Build individual service pages for your highest-priority services, each targeting one specific local keyword. This is how you create relevance breadth without dilution.

SVG Digital builds keyword maps before any SEO engagement begins. If you want to see what your market’s search landscape looks like, that’s part of our free initial consultation.
