A Google Business Profile suspension means your listing has been removed from Google Maps and local search results. For a local service business that depends on Google for leads, a suspension is a revenue emergency. The average suspended profile loses between 30% and 70% of incoming calls from Google, depending on how dominant the GBP was in their lead mix.
Understanding why suspensions happen and how to recover is something every business owner with a GBP should know before it happens to them.
Why Google Suspends Business Profiles
There are two types of suspensions: soft and hard.
A soft suspension means your listing is no longer visible in Maps or local search, but you still have dashboard access. A hard suspension removes your access entirely.
The most common reasons for suspension: your listing violates Google’s guidelines by using a keyword-stuffed business name (adding “O’Fallon Best Plumber” to your actual business name), listing a virtual office or address where you don’t actually operate, multiple profiles created for the same location, using a PO box as your address, or sudden activity that triggers a spam filter.
Bulk reviews added very quickly from the same IP range can also trigger a suspension, which is one reason why review gating and buying reviews carries real risk.
How to Start the Recovery Process
If your listing has been suspended, first confirm it by searching for your business name on Google. If your profile doesn’t appear, check your GBP dashboard for a suspension notice.
For a soft suspension: your first step is to review Google’s guidelines and identify which policy your listing may be violating. Fix the issue if possible. Then submit a reinstatement request through the GBP Help Center. Be specific about your business, your address, and what you believe caused the suspension.
For a hard suspension: the reinstatement request requires you to verify your business identity. This typically means submitting a video verification of your business location, a government-issued ID, and in some cases a utility bill or lease agreement showing your business name at the listed address.
Verification and the Video Process
Google’s video verification for reinstatement requires you to walk through your business on camera: show the exterior signage, the interior (including any branded materials), and your business operations. The video cannot be edited and is submitted directly through the GBP app.
This process was introduced to combat spam listings. Legitimate businesses with real locations are approved relatively quickly. The average reinstatement time for legitimate businesses is 3 to 10 business days.
Prevention Is Easier Than Recovery
Audit your GBP against Google’s guidelines once per quarter. Confirm that your business name matches your actual business name on your website and physical signage. Don’t add service keywords to your name. Don’t use an address that isn’t your operational location.
Keep your profile active with photos and posts, as inactive profiles are more likely to get flagged in Google’s spam detection.
