How to Use Google Search Console to Find Quick SEO Wins

Google Search Console is free, it connects directly to Google’s data about your site, and most small business owners who have it installed have never opened the right reports. The data inside it can reveal quick SEO wins that are invisible in any other tool.

Here is the specific workflow we use when auditing a new client’s search presence.

The Performance Report: Your Map to Existing Opportunities

Go to Search Console and click Performance in the left menu, then Search Results. You’ll see your total impressions, clicks, average position, and average click-through rate over a date range.

Now do this: click on Pages, then sort by Impressions (high to low). Look at the pages with the most impressions and the lowest click-through rates. These are pages that Google is showing to a lot of searchers but that very few people are clicking.

A page with 5,000 impressions per month and a 1.5% CTR is getting 75 clicks. If you can improve that CTR to 4%, it becomes 200 clicks per month. No new content. No new links. Just a better title tag and meta description.

Click on any page in the report to filter and see which specific keywords are generating those impressions. You’ll often find that a page is ranking for keywords that aren’t in its title tag or H1. That’s your optimization signal: update the title tag to include the keyword you’re already ranking for.

The Coverage Report: Indexing Problems You Didn’t Know About

Click on Indexing in the left menu, then Pages. You’ll see a breakdown of your site’s indexed and non-indexed pages.

Click into the “Not indexed” section. Google will show you exactly why specific pages aren’t being indexed. Common reasons: “Discovered, currently not indexed” (Google found the page but hasn’t crawled it), “Crawled, currently not indexed” (Google crawled it but decided not to index it, often a quality signal), or “Blocked by robots.txt” (your site is actively preventing Google from indexing certain pages).

If your contact page, service pages, or location pages show up as not indexed, you have a critical problem. Those pages should be indexed.

The Core Web Vitals Report: Your Speed Baseline

Under Experience, click Core Web Vitals. This report shows you which of your pages fail Google’s performance standards on mobile and desktop. Pages with failing Core Web Vitals are flagged for review.

Prioritize fixing failing pages that also have high impressions or traffic. A high-traffic page with failing Core Web Vitals is both a ranking risk and a conversion problem.

Linking Search Console to Google Analytics

Connecting both accounts gives you the most complete picture available: organic search traffic from Search Console combined with conversion data from Analytics. This is how you see which organic keywords are driving form completions and calls, not just clicks.

In Search Console, go to Settings, then Google Analytics Association, and connect your Analytics property. Once linked, you can see this data in GA4 under the Acquisition reports.

SVG Digital uses Search Console data as the foundation of every SEO strategy. If you haven’t opened the Performance report in the last 30 days, you’re leaving wins on the table.
