Citation Building for Local SEO: What Matters, What Doesn’t, and Where to Start

Not all local citations are created equal. A citation is any online mention of your business name, address, and phone number. Some citations have meaningful impact on your local rankings. Others are spam directories that waste your time and may actually hurt.

Here is a prioritized framework for building citations that move the needle.

Tier 1: The Citations That Actually Matter

The highest-authority citations for local SEO are the major data aggregators: Data Axle, Localeze, and Foursquare. These three services feed business data to hundreds of downstream directories. Cleaning up or building your listing on these platforms cascades to platforms you’d never manually submit to.

Google Business Profile is technically a citation and is the most important one. Make sure it matches your NAP data everywhere else.

Apple Maps, Bing Places, and Yelp are the second tier of essential citations. These platforms have meaningful traffic of their own and are pulled into Apple’s Siri results, Bing local, and Microsoft Maps respectively.

Facebook Business Page with your complete address and phone number is a citation. Given Facebook’s domain authority, a complete, consistent Facebook Business Page supports your local SEO.

Your industry directories are next. A dentist in Yorktown should be on Healthgrades, Zocdoc, and the American Dental Association’s directory. An HVAC company should be on Angi, HomeAdvisor, and the contractor directories relevant to their state. These are high-relevance citations that reinforce your category authority.

Tier 2: Local Directories Worth Your Time

Your local Chamber of Commerce directory listing is one of the highest-value local citations available. It’s a geographically relevant link from a trusted local organization. If you’re not in your chamber’s directory, join. The citation alone is worth the membership cost for many businesses.

Local newspaper websites and community directories often accept business listings. In O’Fallon, Yorktown, and Florence, there are regional business directories and local news sites that pass geographic relevance to your listing.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is still a useful citation for trust signals, even though its direct ranking influence has decreased over time.

What to Avoid

Bulk submission services that claim to “submit you to 500+ directories” are generating Tier 3 or Tier 4 citations at best, and many of those directories are low-quality or spam sites. Google can identify low-quality citation patterns. A handful of high-quality citations is better than hundreds of low-quality ones.

Never pay for a citation from any directory that sends you unsolicited emails offering to “update your listing for a fee.” These are typically sites with no real traffic or domain authority.

The Order of Operations for Citation Building

Start with the aggregators. Then complete your Google, Apple, Bing, and Yelp profiles. Then add your industry directories. Then pursue local directories and the chamber. Then let organic citations accumulate over time as you do business and earn press.

The Metric to Track

Use a tool like Moz Local or BrightLocal to track your citation count and consistency score quarterly. The goal is consistent, accurate information across 40-plus major directories, not maximum volume.

SVG Digital builds and manages local citations for clients in all three markets. If your citation profile has gaps, we’ll close them.
